Design for the moment after class
Immediately after a class, students have uneven needs. Some understood the lecture and want a concise review. Some missed a key step. Some were absent. Others will not discover what they misunderstood until they begin an assignment several days later.
A better post-class workflow should support those moments without requiring the educator to create several versions of the same lesson. The class already contains valuable explanations, examples, and decisions about emphasis. The task is to make that material easier to navigate and reuse.
This means planning beyond the recording link. Where will the student begin? How will they see the shape of the lecture? Can they find a topic using the words they remember? Can they move back to the educator’s explanation when a summary is not enough?
Support five simple learning actions
A practical workflow can be designed around five actions: orient, retrieve, understand, practise, and escalate. Each action needs a different kind of support, but they should all connect to the same class material.
Orientation gives the learner a short map of the session: what was covered, how the ideas connect, and which resources belong to the class. Retrieval helps them search for a concept or phrase. Understanding gives them the surrounding explanation. Practice turns the material into questions or prompts. Escalation makes it clear when to ask an educator or support team.
The sequence is not fixed. A student may begin with a question, discover the relevant lecture section, and then create a short review list. The design should let them move between actions without losing context.
- Orient: see the lecture outline and concise summary.
- Retrieve: search by topic, term, or question.
- Understand: open the relevant explanation in context.
- Practise: create notes, prompts, or a focused study guide.
- Escalate: recognise when human clarification is needed.
Reduce friction without removing thinking
A good learning tool should remove unnecessary navigation work, not the mental work of learning. Finding the right lecture moment is friction. Comparing two concepts, explaining an idea in your own words, and recalling a process are valuable cognitive tasks.
This distinction should shape the interface. A generated summary can help a student orient, but it should not become the only material they read. A direct answer can unblock a question, but it should invite the learner to inspect the source and continue reasoning.
Features such as recall prompts are most useful when they create active engagement with course content. The product should help students move from recognition—“I have seen this before”—toward retrieval and explanation.
The aim is to spend less effort searching through files and more effort working with the ideas.
Plan for return visits across the term
Post-class material should remain useful after the immediate week. Before an assessment, a student may need to connect several lectures. During a project, they may return to one technical demonstration. At the end of a unit, the teaching team may want to identify where students repeatedly need clarification.
Consistent structure helps. If every lecture exposes topics, sources, and study actions in the same way, learners spend less time relearning the tool. Course-level search can help them find a concept even when they do not remember which class introduced it.
Institutions should also decide how long course knowledge remains active and how revised teaching material is handled. A return visit is only useful when the learner can tell which material belongs to the current course context.
Make the workflow visible to students and educators
A new tool does not become a learning habit by appearing in the navigation. Students need a clear explanation of when it helps: catching up, locating an explanation, preparing a study guide, or checking the source behind an answer. Educators need to know what the system does with their class and where their judgement remains important.
Introduce the workflow through a real course task. Ask students to find a concept from a recorded class, open the source, and create three recall questions. This demonstrates the relationship between search, context, and practice more clearly than a list of features.
A better post-class workflow is not defined by how much AI it contains. It is defined by whether learners can move from a question to the right teaching context and then take a meaningful next step. Keep that journey short, visible, and grounded in the course.
